What would have happened if the Cold War had suddenly turned very hot in 1991? That's exactly what Wargame: Red Dragon is all about. The complex strategy game is 85% off on Steam until September 3 and is currently available for just under $4.49.

In Wargame: Red Dragon, the Cold War escalates into a large-scale military conflict in Asia in 1991. Players take command of armed forces from a total of 17 nations, including the US, Soviet Union, China, Japan, North Korea and South Korea. The focus is not on individual soldiers, but entire armies: From infantry and tanks to artillery, helicopters, fighter jets and warships, the strategy game deploys just about everything a modern battlefield has to offer.

In terms of gameplay, success primarily depends on spotting the enemy early, finding the right response to their maneuvers and positioning your own troops wisely. Around 1,450 different units are available, allowing players to assemble their own army decks before battles. Those who keep sight lines and weapon ranges in mind and combine their units effectively have a good chance of gaining the upper hand. Things get particularly intense in multiplayer, where up to 20 players can compete against each other at the same time.

In its review, GameWatcher was particularly impressed by the dynamic campaign, extensive deck-building and considerable strategic depth. The latter, however, also comes with a steep learning curve that can quickly overwhelm newcomers to the genre – and the sometimes opaque game mechanics do little to help. According to the reviewers, it can sometimes be difficult to understand why certain tactical situations play out the way they do. Nevertheless, the game ultimately earned a strong 8.5 out of 10.

Players are also impressed: On Steam, 88% of more than 19,700 user reviews are positive. Metacritic lists a Metascore of 78, while the User Score stands at 8.0. On the Steam Deck, the strategy game from Eugen Systems is rated as “Playable,” although the UI and gameplay are clearly designed with mouse and keyboard controls in mind.

Wargame: Red Dragon normally costs just under $30 on Steam. An 85% discount, however, brings the price down to $4.49 until September 3. According to SteamDB's price history, this marks the first time the RTS has dropped below the $5 mark – previous discounts topped out at 80%. All five paid DLCs are currently discounted as well: Anyone who wants the complete set will have to spend an additional $16.65.
