Former Rockstar director calls GTA 6 leaks a “nothing burger” as Take-Two gives Discord a September 4 deadline to unmask CyberLeek
Former Rockstar director Obbe Vermeij calls GTA VI leaks a “nothing burger,” stating that most gamers won’t pay attention to them in order to keep their experience spoiler-free when the game arrives on November 19, 2026. Meanwhile, Take-Two has given Discord a September 4 deadline to respond. It’s ironic, considering Obbe’s calm take sits right next to the giant publisher’s hard-line declaration and deadline.
A 'nothing burger' for management?
For those who don’t know, Obbe Vermeij served as Rockstar North’s technical director and was one of the creators behind the 3D Universe’s hit GTA III: Liberty City and the HD Universe’s GTA IV. Given his credentials, he has the standing to speak on the matter.
Obbe left Rockstar North in 2009 after fourteen years as technical director. This week, with Rockstar’s own Netflix reveal just a few days away, he chimed in on CyberLeek’s leaks, which have put GTA 6 footage online almost every day since August 18. He says there’s nothing to worry about. Obbe did his best to calm the situation on X and said:
“Calm down, everybody. The leaks are a ‘nothing burger.’
As a marketing strategy, R* is trying to keep the game under wraps longer than other publishers. All that's happened is that some footage has leaked slightly ahead of the Netflix thing next week.
90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets. They don’t have the time and don’t want spoilers.
I imagine the teams are a little annoyed, but not more than that. I was there during Hot Coffee. It was a nightmare for management (R* New York), but it didn’t affect us (R* North) much. The current leaks are far less consequential than HC was.
It looks like GTA 6 will be phenomenal and sell for the next 15 years or so. The leaks are just a tiny blip.”
The Hot Coffee feature put Rockstar in more hot water than a few minor leaks, according to Obbe Vermeij, triggering a scandal severe enough to pull the game from store shelves.
Take-Two continues its legal blitz
Take-Two, meanwhile, is ready to take things to court. On August 20, Kirkland & Ellis’s Dale Cendali and Joshua Simmons urged the Southern District of New York to issue a subpoena under 17 U.S.C. § 512(h), the DMCA clause that allows unidentified copyright infringers to be unmasked without a lawsuit.
The filing gives Discord until September 4 to turn over CyberLeek's identity, the leaker who continues to upload GTA VI footage even as it attempts to block their efforts.
