“First Gameplay Impressions Ruined”: Is Rockstar partly to blame for the GTA 6 leaks?

Actual gameplay footage from Grand Theft Auto VI? Fans have been waiting years for it. Now, two videos have surfaced offering a first glimpse of the game. However, they did not come from Rockstar itself, but from leaker Cyberleek, who appears to be trying to exploit fans’ hunger for information in order to make money from it.
A major discussion has now broken out on Reddit. It was sparked by a post from the X account Istura, which argues that while Rockstar is not to blame for the leaks themselves, its long silence helped ruin the community’s first gameplay impressions. The leaked gameplay was generally received positively by the community, but after years of waiting, fans would have preferred a carefully staged presentation from Rockstar rather than unfinished snippets from leaks. Thread creator u/Dreeezy calls this the best take they have seen regarding the latest developments surrounding GTA 6 – and receives plenty of support.
Many Redditors have become increasingly critical of Rockstar’s communication strategy. One fan points out that more than 400 days have passed since the last trailer without Rockstar showing any new video footage. Others are convinced that the developer could easily have satisfied the enormous demand for information itself – for example with short gameplay clips or by gradually releasing the screenshots that had already been published.
At Rockstar parent company Take-Two, there is likely at least some frustration that stronger measures to prevent leaks were not taken. After all, the company’s market value temporarily fell by around $3 billion as a result of the gameplay leaks. But there are also opposing views. Some users think it is exaggerated to assign Rockstar any share of the blame. The leaks could have happened even with a more aggressive marketing campaign – although they probably would not have attracted quite as much attention in that case.
