Deal | WWI shooter with a twist: Chaotic Battlefield alternative is free for a limited time

Gamers who find Battlefield too straightforward and serious might find Over The Top: WWI an interesting alternative. With large-scale multiplayer battles, different classes and numerous vehicles, the WWI shooter follows a similar formula to Battlefield, but takes its historical battles considerably less seriously. Anyone who wants to see for themselves can try the game for free over the weekend – specifically until August 24 at 1 p.m EDT. For those who want to keep playing afterward, there is a 40% discount, reducing the regular price from $19.14 to $11.48. According to SteamDB, the multiplayer shooter, which is also playable on the Steam Deck, has never been cheaper.
Compared with Battlefield, the battlefields in Over The Top: WWI are considerably more chaotic. For one thing, up to 200 players and bots can fight each other simultaneously. The fully destructible environments add another layer of unpredictability: Explosions blast craters into the ground, bring buildings crashing down and destroy fortifications. Players can also dig their own trenches, allowing them to deliberately reshape the terrain to their advantage.

There are eight classes to choose from, each with its own role – including riflemen, engineers, officers and flamethrower specialists. Despite its historical setting, the game does not take itself too seriously, injecting a healthy dose of gallows humor into the war: Players can, for example, take out enemies with a baguette or boost their comrades’ morale by playing the bagpipes. In addition to the single-player campaign, the game also offers standalone skirmishes and a multiplayer mode.
The Wand Report reviewed Over The Top and awarded it a solid 8 out of 10. The reviewers particularly praised the game for its intense atmosphere and enormous gameplay freedom. However, it suffers from some minor technical issues and imprecise gunplay. Steam reviews are still quite positive, with 83% of around 6,700 reviews giving the game a thumbs-up. According to SteamDB, player numbers have also risen sharply during the free promotion. While the game recently rarely had more than 100 concurrent players, more than 1,500 players were on Over The Top’s battlefields at the time of research – good conditions for quickly finding matches with as few bots as possible.
