Insomniac Games' latest effort may become one of the year’s best-selling PS5 games. Still, naysayers on X are dissuading buyers from pre-ordering Marvel’s Wolverine before its release date. The studio’s marketing director thinks algorithms are skewing opinions of the first-party title.

Marvel’s Wolverine previews have been largely positive, but skeptics on social media aren’t convinced. On X, many of the most-liked posts slam the PS5 exclusive game. James Stevenson, Insomniac's Community and Marketing Director, has now addressed the rampant criticism.

Brutal honesty from a studio rep

Stevenson regularly monitors and responds to the concerns of players. However, he noted how negative the messages have become. Stevenson says it’s a “relentless onslaught that I cannot believe is good for anyone’s mental health nor representative.”

The Insomniac team member believes the algorithm X uses to rank search results is to blame. The social media platform favors posts that encourage engagement. Many comments drawing the strongest reactions argue that Marvel's Wolverine will disappoint on its release date.

Push Square highlighted controversial takes on the first-party PS5 game. One example, called “God tier slander,” has 72K likes and focuses on Logan’s Sentinel boss battle. The gamer accuses developers of recycling an encounter from Ben 10: Protector of Earth.

Other followers expected gameplay that differentiated itself from the Spider-Man series. Logan has a more direct approach to combat, but like with Peter Parker, only a few buttons are needed. Critics on X poke fun at Wolverine with video clips showing these simplistic inputs.

PS5 disc defenders assembled

Another factor is likely the protests over Sony’s decision to trim PS5 disc production in 2028. Ahead of the Marvel’s Wolverine release date, buyers can pre-order a Blu-ray version. Nevertheless, physical game advocates are seizing on the high-profile PlayStation title.

YouTube comments pleading for the company to reverse course dominate the new D23 Expo video. PlayStation’s social media accounts face the same issue. They can’t promote the Insomniac creation without digital gaming opponents dominating the discourse. Rumors suggest some studios are growing weary of seeing marketing campaigns hijacked.

Most previews disagree that combat is too basic or that the more linear title is too similar to Spider-Man. Buyers contemplating Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 pre-orders may hold the same view. Ultimately, if it meets sales projections, Sony won’t dwell on questionable X algorithms.
