A shield is normally used for blocking – in The Knightling, it's used for fighting, gliding and even surfing through the open world. The charming action adventure is 80% off on Steam until September 6 and is available for less than $6 for the first time.

In The Knightling, players take on the role of a young squire whose mentor, Sir Lionstone, mysteriously disappears during a mission. All that remains behind is his legendary shield, Magnustego. The aspiring knight therefore sets out to find his mentor, exploring the colorful fantasy realm of Clesseia with its cities, fields, canyons and ruins along the way. The action adventure from Twirlbound is 80% off on Steam until September 6, bringing the price down from just under $30 to $5.99. According to SteamDB, previous discounts topped out at 75% – meaning the current offer marks a new all-time low.

In terms of gameplay, The Knightling combines classic action-adventure gameplay in the style of The Legend of Zelda with fast-paced 3D platforming. The most important tool is arguably the Magnustego shield: It is not only used for blocking, but can also be incorporated into attacks and combos – and even serves as a means of transportation. Players can use it to glide through the air or surf down hills and slopes. Double jumps and air currents provide additional freedom of movement in the highly vertical game world.

Away from the main story, there are side quests, races, puzzles, hidden areas and numerous collectibles to discover. While exploring, players also earn “Praise,” which can be used to unlock new abilities and upgrades for the Knightling and his shield.

TheSixthAxis awarded the game 8 out of 10 in its review, particularly praising The Knightling for its charming game world and enjoyable traversal. According to the publication, the game creates a strong sense of exploration that remains engaging over time. The combat system, side quests and orchestral soundtrack were also well received. Criticism, on the other hand, was directed at some frustrating platforming sections, the limited enemy variety and a few technical issues, including FPS drops, pop-in and camera problems.

The Knightling fares even better on Steam: 88% of more than 500 user reviews are positive. Metacritic lists a Metascore of 71 and a User Score of 8.8. On the Steam Deck, the action adventure is rated as “Playable.”
