The shelf lives for the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 may be longer than initially planned. A new report suggests that Microsoft envisions them as lower-cost alternatives to the next Xbox console and PS6. Rising storage and memory prices have inflated the predicted prices of upcoming gaming systems.

One of the central concerns with the new Xbox console and PS6 is price. Higher storage and memory costs could make the new systems less accessible. However, according to a new report, Microsoft anticipates that the current-gen options will remain viable for the foreseeable future.

Jez Corden of Windows Central published an article previewing upcoming Xbox hardware. He also shed light on how the company views existing consoles:

I’m told Microsoft expects the Gen-9 Xbox Series X|S and PS5 to have a longer tail than usual as a result of this ‘broadening’ hardware endpoint ecosystem.

Corden notes that support for PS4 and Xbox One games persisted years after their follow-ups arrived. He then explained that developers plan long-term support for lesser-powered devices like the Switch 2 and Steam Deck. That, along with backward compatibility, would make it easier to produce titles for other aging systems.

Given the rumors about the new Xbox console and PS6 prices, there will be a massive market for affordable alternatives. Microsoft has labeled its next gaming system as “high-end”. Meanwhile, some insiders expect the PlayStation alternative to carry a $600-$900 MSRP. Adding to concerns, the Series X|S and PS5 are more expensive than when they launched in 2020.

What will replace the Xbox Series S?

When Microsoft debuted the Series X, it was accompanied by the budget-friendly Series S. That may not be the case with the console/PC hybrid, which AMD hinted could have a 2027 release date. Corden did suggest that OEM partners would offer streamlined configurations to cater to gamers of more modest means.

Raising doubts about the Windows Central report, the available Xbox consoles are struggling to find buyers. Sales have plummeted as the company has focused on Windows devices and cross-platform games. Analysts have wondered whether it makes sense to continue production at all. The PS5, on the other hand, is better positioned to thrive even after the PS6 release date.
