Project Helix release date gets promising update from possible new Xbox console supplier

Some rumors point to Microsoft shipping Project Helix later in 2027. Still, the memory shortage, among other factors, could delay the new Xbox console release date. However, an update from a PSU manufacturer may indicate that production of the system is about to ramp up.
Nintendo Patents Watch shared a fiscal report from Chicony Electronics, a maker of laptop and console components. The Taiwanese company previously supplied PSUs for Microsoft’s gaming systems. While March revenue fell 5.19% year over year, it has a more positive outlook for the 2nd half of 2026.

The financial report projects that, boosted by orders of “gaming console power supplies”, YoY revenue will double. Despite the new Gaming CEO, Asha Sharma, recommitting to hardware, sales of the Xbox Series X|S are slow. There is also no evidence that Chicony has the same relationship with Sony, Nintendo, or Valve. Consequently, Project Helix could be responsible for the lofty sales forecast.
Will Project Helix dev kits be ready in time?
As noted by Nintendo Patents Watch, adopters will first need dev kits to support the Magnus-powered machine. At GDC 2026, developers learned that the alpha version would not ship until 2027. That raised some concerns that studios would have enough time to prepare for a holiday debut. Now, it seems more likely that the tools will be available earlier than some had feared.
Several obstacles remain that could delay the new Xbox console release date. Chicony explained that tariffs and low semiconductor stocks slowed its performance. Those problems persist, as do the storage and memory shortages. With inflated SSD and DRAM costs, Microsoft may struggle to offer an already premium Project Helix at a reasonable price.
Even without manufacturing challenges, there is doubt about the future of Xbox hardware. Not all analysts are convinced that a hybrid console/PC will find mainstream success. So far, efforts to revamp Windows into a couch-friendly OS have yielded mixed results. If there are fewer Xbox exclusive games, there is also less incentive not to purchase the rival PS6.
