XCOM 2 is currently heavily discounted on Steam, hitting its previous low of $2.99, a big drop from its regular price tag of $59.99. This deal is part of the ongoing 2K publisher sale, which includes many other games from the publisher. The sale will end on February 19, 2025.
Developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, XCOM 2 hit the market in 2016 as a turn-based tactical strategy game, offering players challenging gameplay. Set 20 years after the events of its prequel, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, at a time when the Earth and its human inhabitants have come under the control of aliens.
Players are tasked with rebuilding the battered XCOM army to revolt and overthrow the alien ADVENT regime. Players get to recruit soldiers from five distinct classes, each with a unique skill tree allowing for character development. Combat aside, players are also in charge of an alien ship named Avenger, which was captured and repurposed by XCOM.
XCOM 2 received criticism from GameStar for having a challenging start, which players may find annoying, while becoming too easy towards the endgame following a truckload of upgrades. The game, however, has four difficulty levels, allowing users to adjust in-game difficulty.
XCOM 2 was well-received upon release, winning the IGN Best Strategy Game of the Year award. Review-wise, the game has accumulated over 106,000 Steam reviews, and 84% of these reviews are positive. Over on Metacritic, it showcases a Metascore of 88. It is rated Steam Deck Playable and has full support for five languages (interface, audio, and subtitles), with partial support for six others (interface and subtitles).
While a 95% discount is a great deal for XCOM 2, it is worth noting that the game does frequently drop to this price. It is also important to know that a good part of the game experience is tied to DLCs, with the most prominent one being XCOM 2: War of the Chosen (currently 90% off at $3.99). The other DLCs are also on sale.
