Sony Interactive Entertainment has issued a press release stating that the Gran Turismo racing franchise has enjoyed sales of over 80.4 million units. The original game in the popular series was released in 1997 for the PlayStation platform and eventually sold over 10 million copies on its own. Gran Turismo Sport (2017) is the latest installment in the franchise.

A press release published by Sony Interactive Entertainment has heralded the incredible achievement by the Gran Turismo series of racing titles. Over 80.4 million copies of the games have been sold in the 20-year period since the first game’s release. The Gran Turismo titles have generally been well-received, with the original game and Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec being the highlights of the series. The creator of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi, had this to say about the impressive sales record:

It’s hard to imagine that 80.4 million copies of Gran Turismo have been played during the 20-year history of the franchise. It makes me really happy to think of the immense amount of time that has been poured into playing our games!

Although the Gran Turismo series is one of the best-selling video-game franchises, 80.4 million sales pale in comparison to those of Mario (over 500 million sales) and Grand Theft Auto (over 250 million sales). There are even higher-selling racing franchises, such as Need for Speed (150 million) and Mario Kart (110 million). But the famously accurate Polyphony Digital-developed series has been restricted to just the PlayStation platform, so its worldwide historical sales total is all that more impressive.
