Openreach has added the 5,000th electric van to its fleet. The company provides telecommunications infrastructure services in the UK and is committed to becoming carbon-neutral by March 2031.
The 5,000-vehicle-strong electric component of Openreach’s fleet means it will eliminate 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, equivalent to 7,000 fewer petrol cars on the roads.
Openreach is marking the milestone with a specially designed van emblazoned with “Let’s Reach Zero” branding. The motto reflects the company’s commitment to reducing emissions, minimizing waste, and preserving the natural environment.
Openreach will acquire an additional 2,000 electric vehicles by March 2026. It will also set up EV charging infrastructure at its operational sites and at the homes of its engineers to support its EV fleets. More than 2,500 chargers have been installed so far. One of Openreach’s collaborations will enable its drivers to charge their vans at First Bus depots, a crucial provision for drivers who have no access to off-road parking.
The company’s goal is to slash emissions by swapping out most of its 23,000 traditional automobiles. Openreach aims to enhance air quality and contribute to the UK’s net-zero goals.
Clive Selley, CEO of Openreach, said: “We know the impact our operations have, so seeing our 5,000th electric van on the road is a proud moment for everyone at Openreach. By continuing to upgrade our fleet, and by installing EV chargers in our engineers’ homes and our operational sites – we’re removing barriers to adoption, improving air quality, and supporting the communities we serve.”
