Tesla may be on the verge of a resurgence in the UK, as sales rose in June 2025. The automaker performed 14 percent better year-on-year as the EV market continues to expand.
Buyers snapped up 7,719 Tesla cars in June, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The boost occurred in the same month that the updated Model Y deliveries began.
Independent data from New Automotive, however, indicates a slightly more modest growth of 12 percent at 7,891 units. The two research companies use different data sources and computation methods.
Tesla, however, is not yet in the clear in the UK, as year-to-date sales dipped by 2 percent. In addition, the automaker’s biggest competitor, BYD, saw its sales quadruple to 2,498 EVs. Fellow American Ford also grew its EV sales by more than 400 percent.
The overall car market in the UK grew by 6.7 percent to 191,316 units compared to the same period last year, as 191,316 automobiles found new owners. June was the best since 2019, with electric vehicle registrations jumping 39 percent to account for 25 percent of all sales, indicating increased openness to e-mobility.
SMMT, however, notes that EV sales are still primarily driven by incentives. Chief Executive Mike Hawes commented, “That EV growth, however, is still being driven by substantial industry support with manufacturers using every channel and unsustainable discounting to drive activity, yet it remains below mandated levels. As we have seen in other countries, government incentives can supercharge the market transition, without which the climate change ambitions we all share will be under threat.”
