It is never a dull moment in the Chinese EV space as another Tesla Model Y challenger breaks cover. Xpeng officially launched the G7 SUV, competitively priced, and secured thousands of orders in under 10 minutes.
The Xpeng G7 will start at just $27,325, significantly undercutting the industry-leading Tesla Model Y, which costs $36,770. The new SUV is also cheaper than the Xiaomi YU7, which launched last week at $35,000.
Xpeng followed Xiaomi’s playbook at the launch event by directly comparing the G7 to the Tesla Model Y. The former EV has a rear-mounted 292 hp electric motor that can propel it from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. It has a driving range of up to 702 km (CLTC standard) based on either a 68.5 kWh or 80.8 kWh battery pack. Xpeng claims the battery can add up to 271 miles (436 km) in 10 minutes.
The G7 features a 15.6-inch central touch-enabled display in the cabin for infotainment and accessing settings. It also boasts a massive 87-inch heads-up display (HUD) developed with Huawei. All the computing power comes from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset.
Other features include an 819-liter trunk, a road-sensitive AI-powered suspension system, a 20-speaker premium audio setup, and 8-inch control screens for rear passengers, among others. Xpeng also promises that a later update this year will add Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.
The Xpeng G7 is available in three trim levels: the Max ($27,325), a longer range Max ($28,720), and the Ultra ($31,520).
Xpeng secured over 10,000 orders for the G7 within nine minutes of its launch. It stated on Weibo that deliveries are starting soon, and some social media users have uploaded screenshots showing they could receive their car in one to two weeks.
