XPeng has announced the SUV with the longest range in the world, achieved by equipping its G7 EV with a gas engine generator.
The claimed 1,704 km of combined range for the G7 plug-in hybrid are actually on the local CLTC cycle which is typically about a third more generous than the EPA estimate, so the range on the US cycle would be a bit over 700 miles, which is still very impressive.
The so-called Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) are currently all the rage in China, as they solve the range anxiety problem during long trips, despite the abundance of fast charging infrastructure there. Even companies like XPeng and Xiaomi, which started as pure electric plays, are now launching or contemplating EREVs, let alone juggenauts like BYD.
While Xiaomi is planning to release one with a record 70+ kWh battery capacity that will probably break the G7’s record, for now it is the “world’s longest-range SUV,” boasts XPeng. Its 56 kWh battery pack is as big as those in some budget EV models, and is charged by a high-efficiency 1.5T gas engine powered by a 16-gallon fuel tank.
XPeng has also equipped the EREV with an 800V powertrain architecture that allows 5C charging speeds, taking the LFP battery to 80% in just 12 minutes or so. The purely electric range of 430 km on a charge is the longest in the plug-in hybrid SUV category, too. Again, the EPA estimate equivalent is likely around the 200-mile mark, which should be enough for most daily driving before the 1.5T onboard generator kicks in. As XPeng puts it, the SUV with the longest range carries around its own personal Supercharger.
The local pricing of the top G7 trim is the equivalent of $32,000, and XPeng has equipped it multiple noise cancellation systems for environmental and road noises, as well as an AI-controlled range extender operation designed for the quietest experience.
