According to Auto Zeitung, the heart of the California 1.5 eHybrid 4Motion is a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine with 177 hp (130 kW), combined with an electric motor on the front axle and another electric motor on the rear axle for all-wheel drive. The system produces a total of 245 hp (180 kW) and 350 Nm of torque. The plug-in hybrid reaches a range of up to 59 miles (95 km) in pure electric mode; in practice, around 50 miles (80 km) is more realistic. The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission ensures efficient power transmission. The California weighs approximately 2,567 kg and measures 5.17 m in length.
Interior and equipment
The interior remains true to the classic California style: a pop-up roof, individual seats and an extendable table create functional living space. The lower bed measures 1.06 m wide, the upper bed 1.14 m, and the kitchenette includes a single-burner gas stove and sink. The auxiliary air conditioning ensures pleasant temperatures, while app control of the roof and on-board technology offers new flexibility. Two sliding doors facilitate access and create additional freedom of movement.
Practical use and limitations
The reduced payload of 844 lb (383 kg) compared to 1398 lb (634 kg) for the diesel model may be a limiting factor for families or longer trips. The electric range is primarily suitable for commuters or short trips. The electric cooling function, lightweight individual seats and increased storage space are positive features compared to older models.
Camper flair and modern technology
The VW California 1.5 eHybrid 4Motion attempts to combine traditional camper flair with modern technology. For campers who value sustainability and flexible use, the new California is an interesting option, even if the payload and electric range set limits.
