It is an exciting time to be alive when our cars can find their way to us. Tesla has achieved the world’s first autonomous car delivery and posted video evidence. The company uploaded a three-and-a-half-minute clip on X highlighting the first-ever unaided ride from the factory to the customer.
The Model Y left Giga Texas in Austin and self-navigated to its new owner’s home. It took about 30 minutes, and, according to the post, the route crossed parking lots, highways, and various parts of the city.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk had posted earlier about the achievement on his personal X account. He stated that the delivery was not remotely operated at any point, and as could be seen in the uploaded video, there was no one in the Model Y.
The company’s head of artificial intelligence and Autopilot, Ashok Elluswamy, said the electric SUV reached 72 m/h (116 km/h) during the iconic ride.
Meanwhile, the self-delivery occurred a day before the date Musk announced it would happen, which would have coincided with his 58th birthday. It was also a few days after Tesla launched the Robotaxi service.
Tesla had earlier shared a video of cars moving from the assembly line to the parking lot in Giga Texas. The latest clip shows the company is confident to let its EVs venture into the wild on their own.
It is not yet known how deeply Tesla will integrate self-delivery into its operations. However, the latest feat is an excellent and well-deserved PR for the company and driverless driving in general.
