Pocket DS: Ayaneo releases new 165 Hz OLED gaming handheld with dual-screen design

Ayaneo has expanded its Android-based gaming handheld lineup again after releasing the Pocket S2 and Pocket S2 Pro in late spring. While those pair utilise Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 chipset, Ayaneo has opted for the older Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 in the Pocket DS, which also powers its Pocket EVO and Pocket DMG (curr. $579.99 on Amazon).

First teased in July, the Pocket DS is another dual-screen gaming handheld that builds on the design showcased in the Flip 1S DS. However, the Pocket DS starts for 50% less than the Flip 1S DS at $399 when backed via Indiegogo. To achieve those cost savings, Ayaneo equips the entry-level model with 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 GB of UFS 3.1 storage, although up to 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage is also available.

Moreover, Ayaneo equips the Pocket DS with a 7-inch, 1080p and 165 Hz OLED primary display that delivers up to 800 nits peak brightness. By contrast, the secondary display measures 5 inches diagonally with a 1,024 x 768-pixel IPS panel, capped at 550 nits. On top of that, the Pocket DS leverages an 8,000 mAh battery and what Ayaneo describes as 'PC-grade cooling'. Currently, Ayaneo hopes to begin shipping Pocket DS orders in October.
