The Retroid Dual Screen was supposed to start shipping today, August 19, following a 2-week delay. Now, Retroid has announced another delay, but for a good reason.
In an early review of the Retroid Dual Screen by Retro Game Corps (video below), it was discovered that there was a noticeable lag when the Dual Screen accessory mirrored the main display. According to an official statement by Retroid, the 3-frame latency was initially ‘believed to be unfixable’. Thankfully, its team has been able to bring it down to ‘nearly zero’.
However, the fix requires a firmware update for the Retroid Dual Screen and an OTA update for the handheld in use such as the Retroid Pocket Mini V2 (available on Amazon for $229). Retroid plans to update the Dual Screen Add-on before it begins to ship out orders, but unfortunately, this will cause a 3-day delay in shipping.
The statement issued by the manufacturer also implies that some units seem to have been shipped already without the fix. Retroid says it will send a special cable (at no extra cost) to these customers that will be used to update the Retroid Dual Screen Add-On. However, subsequent orders will ship with the fix already applied.
The press release didn't say if the OTA update for the handhelds that will include the fix is the same one that is scheduled to roll out this week or a different one. It has also not released a guide on how to manually update the firmware of the Dual Screen Add-On. It is also not known if the firmware update for the Retroid Dual Screen will be sufficient for those who purchase the variant designed for non-Retroid devices.
