Qualcomm is expected to replace the Snapdragon 8 Elite at the end of the summer with a second-generation edition. In the meantime, the company has updated its Snapdragon 7 series following the introduction of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 in May.
For context, Qualcomm claimed that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 offers 27% CPU, 30% GPU and 65% NPU performance uplifts over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. By contrast, the new Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 hardly makes any progress over the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 when it comes to performance, which should come as no surprise considering their shared SM7635 part numbers.
Officially, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 is just 7% faster than its predecessor. As far as we can tell, most of this increase can be attributed to a 200 MHz prime core boost clock, which now reaches 2.7 GHz. Conversely, the chipset's other Cortex-A720 cores remain stuck at 2.4 GHz; Qualcomm has kept the four Cortex-A520 cores from the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 at 1.8 GHz, too.
With that being said, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 adds support for up to 2,900 x 1,300-pixel displays while maintaining a 144 Hz peak refresh rate. Other than that, we cannot find any other technical differences from the older Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. Currently, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 is expected to debut inside the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus as a replacement for its Snapdragon 7s Gen 3-powered predecessor (curr. $374 on Amazon).
