AYN Technologies is pressing ahead with revealing new information about one of its upcoming gaming handhelds. Only initially teased yesterday, the AYN Thor is a departure of sorts for a company that has only released horizontal gaming handhelds until now. Nonetheless, it seems that the AYN Thor will go toe-to-toe with the Ayaneo Pocket DS and the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 (curr. $269 on Amazon) based on new teasers.
To recap, AYN previously hinted that the Thor features a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset of some description. Additionally, its short video showcased the handheld's dual display design albeit without elaborating further. Now, AYN has revealed that the Thor will surpass the Ayaneo Pocket DS in a crucial area.
As the image below highlights, the Thor has a 120 Hz OLED primary display that spans 6-inches across. Consequently, Ayn's first clamshell gaming handheld will sit between the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 and Ayaneo Pocket DS, which contain 5.5-inch and 7-inch primary displays, respectively. In subsequent Discord posts, AYN has clarified that the 6-inch display inside the Thor also supports touch inputs.
Moreover, the AYN Thor contains an OLED panel as a secondary display, unlike the Ayaneo Pocket DS. Spanning 3.92-inches with a 60 Hz refresh rate, AYN implies that this is an off-the-shelf solution. Therefore, it seems likely that AYN is sourcing the same panel Retroid uses inside the Pocket Classic and Pocket Mini V2 that was originally intended for the LG Wing. Although more details about the Thor remain unknown for now, we suspect that AYN will share more teasers in the coming days.
