Tekken 8 was released in January last year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. With the Switch 2 arriving in June this year and proving to be quite capable in terms of performance, a port for Tekken 8 wouldn’t seem like a stretch. While the director of the game feels it would be a good business decision, the port would require a lot of work.
Speaking with Eurogamer earlier this month (August), game director Katsuhiro Harada said, “It's an interesting option, and not totally off the table.” He added, “From a business standpoint, [the Switch 2] is doing quite well, so it would be a very good business decision if you're trying to get a bigger audience.” While it is unclear if there are any concrete plans at Bandai Namco to port Tekken 8 to the Switch 2, this does come as positive news for fans of fighting games and handhelds.
Harada did mention that it would require a lot of work to get the game running on the Switch 2. This makes the decision of porting it on to the handheld a difficult one. For now, there is nothing to announce, Harada added jokingly.
Till now, there hasn’t been a single Tekken game on the Switch family of consoles. In 2012, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was released for the Wii U but that remains the only Tekken game available on a Nintendo console. Seeing as how Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and other AAA titles can run well on the Switch 2, it should be capable enough to run Tekken 8 as well, provided the developers are willing to put in the work.
