After almost three decades since it arrived on the market, the Tekken franchise is taking a major leap forward. The recently unveiled Tekken 8 game is being developed from scratch using the Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine, and promises to bring the visual area of this iconic series to a whole new level.

Introduced with the first-person shooter game Unreal back in 1998, the Unreal Engine reached its fifth major iteration in April 2022. The long list of Unreal Engine 5-based games currently in development includes titles made for all platforms, including mobile games. Earlier this week, Bandai Namco Entertainment general manager Katsuhiro Harada has confirmed that Tekken 8 is built using this framework.

According to Harada, "all the models and everything from Tekken 7 have been totally discarded," thus Tekken 8 can be considered an entirely new game from a technical perspective. However, some of those involved in its development have been working on the previous titles since the early 2000s.

Tekken 7 introduced the Rage Arts and Rage Drive and many gamers did not receive the changes with open arms. In fact, Harada admitted "there was a lot of backlash," so the new game mechanics turned out quite unpopular at first. After a while, the community's opinion changed and finally considered the changes to turn the game into a title that's "exciting both to play and to watch."

Unfortunately, Bandai Namco's general manager did not reveal any details about the changes that might be in store for the game mechanics. However, he confirmed that Tekken 8 is headed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The interesting fact is that this is the first time in the history of the series when the console version was announced first.

With almost 10 million copies sold, Tekken 7 turned out into a big success for Bandai Namco. Its successor might gain even more followers, but it also depends on its launch date and other variables. Unfortunately, there is no such date to mention, and many details are still waiting to be unveiled.
