Leaker claims Mortal Kombat 1 is the title of the next MK game launching this year
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon yesterday tweeted a teaser with a clock’s sweep hand that jumps from 11 to 1. Apparently, this has something to do with the title of the upcoming MK game launching this year. WB’s CEO claimed in February that MK 12 will be released in 2023, but, according to well-known leaker billbil-kun on Twitter the game is actually called Mortal Kombat 1, which is in line with Boon’s teaser.
Billbil-kun also shared platform availability and pricing. MK 1 is supposed to launch on PS5, Xbox Series S/X, PC and, surprisingly, Nintendo Switch. However, given the restrictive hardware on the Switch, the new MK 1 will probably be available as part of the cloud streaming service. The leaked price points basically confirm this, as the Switch version would cost US$59.99, while the other versions have a US$69.99 price. There is also a Premium version at US$109.99 and a Kollector’s version with physical media only for the PS5 and Xbox consoles at US$249.99.
Despite being called MK 1, this may not be a reboot of the series. Some fans argue that this could be another “reunion-like” title with a big roster like MK Trilogy or MK Armageddon, and this makes sense since the game is supposed to celebrate the 30th anniversary. On the other hand, some other fans believe this could be a complete timeline reset as hinted in the ending of MK 11 Aftermath. In this case, the game would be set 500 years before the original MK 1 timeline, during the Great Kung Lao period, which would see very few returning characters from the first games.
The exact details as well as a firm launch date are rumored to be unveiled at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase event happening in two weeks.
