Ed Boon tried to keep MK 12 under wraps as much as possible, but WB CEO David Zaslav needed to assure investors that 2023 is packed with blockbusters and spilled the beans too early during the recent Q4 2022 earnings call.

Back in October 2022, when Mortal Kombat was celebrating 30 years of existence, NetherRealm Studios founder Ed Boon started hinting that a new fighting game should soon be announced. Support for Mortal Kombat 11 ended in 2021, and everyone was expecting an announcement for a new MK game given the approach of the 30th anniversary. Boon had been very tight-lipped regarding this new project. Is this MK 12? Or a new Injustice game? We have seen NetherRealm Studios alternating MK games with Injustice ones in the past decade, so many were speculating that the next project could be set in the Injustice universe. The mystery was recently solved, but not with an official announcement from Ed Boon, as we were expecting. Instead, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav spoiled things during the latest earnings call by mentioning that MK 12 is coming this year.

2022 was overall a problematic year for Warner Bros. as Zaslav heavily restructured many aspects of the company, so the financial side accordingly took a hit. However, the WB CEO assured the investors that this year things will change for the better. We can already see that the gaming side is particularly auspicious with the new Harry Potter game Hogwarts Legacy, which brought in US$850 million in just 2 weeks from launch. The company wants to continue along the same lines this year with games like Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Sqad: Kill the Justice League. Zaslav mentions that WB has “ambitious launch projections” for both MK 12 and the new Suicide Squad game.

Presumably, Boon and his team were preparing to announce the new game at a video game show this year, and this early spoiler from the WB CEO sort of ruins the thrill of anticipation. Still, it is not like fans did not know something was coming since Boon has been constantly tweeting ambiguous clues and teasers. The cat is now out of the bag and Boon might as well acknowledge it with a small teaser to hype things even more. Boon's immediate reaction was to tweet about Injustice 3 as a joke.
