The Nintendo Switch 2 officially supports gaming mice, which could make playing shooters, strategy games or even titles such as Super Mario Maker much more enjoyable. A video showcases how the mouse support works in practice.

One of the new features of the Nintendo Switch 2 is the mouse mode of the Joy-Con 2. If operated like a mouse and moved across a table or similar surface, the Joy-Con 2 automatically functions very much like a mouse. However, this only works for games that support this mode.

This includes several blockbusters at launch such as Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, and Civilization VII. But as it turns out, it is also possible connect a USB mouse to the Nintendo Switch 2 instead of using the Joy-Con as a mouse. Koei Tecmo uses Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening as an example to demonstrate how USB mice work in practice.

As soon as the mouse is plugged in, a notification appears in the top left corner of the screen confirming that the mouse has been recognized. It can then be used directly in the game. As soon as the mouse is moved, the iconic mouse cursor appears, which makes selecting items easier. When the Joy-Con is used, the cursor transforms back into the controller-optimized selection tool.

Using a Joy-Con in the left hand and the mouse in the right hand to control games more comfortably is also possible. Whether Nintendo will offer a system-wide left-handed mode is unclear, but it is at least possible to activate a left-handed mode in the game settings and adjust the mouse sensitivity. Details on supported mouse models are still pending, such as whether a wireless mouse with a USB dongle can also be used.
