The Zombie Army series is a spin-off of Rebellion’s Sniper Elite franchise, originally starting as a stand-alone mod called Nazi Zombie Army, built on the foundation of Sniper Elite V2. Instead of historical World War II scenarios, it dives into an alternate timeline where Adolf Hitler, on the brink of defeat, unleashes a horde of undead soldiers in a last-ditch effort to win the war. Zombie Army 4: Dead War continues this dark fantasy – Hitler may have fallen, but his undead forces are rising once more. As a member of a resistance team of specialists, you’ll journey through deserted cities, eerie catacombs and ravaged military sites in a desperate mission to stop the zombie outbreak at its source.
Zombie Army 4 blends classic third-person shooting with chaotic co-op action for up to four players. At its core is a horde-style gameplay loop, where wave after wave of undead enemies keeps the tension high. The game features a variety of levels, tough boss fights and customizable weapons enhanced with flamethrower mods, electric charges and explosive add-ons. A standout element is the signature killcam from Sniper Elite, showcasing slow-motion shots that graphically capture bones breaking, organs rupturing or skulls shattering on impact. Beyond the main campaign, players can tackle challenges, level up to unlock new skills and cosmetics, and enjoy the game’s dark sense of humor.
Reviews: Fun gunplay meets flat storytelling and repetitive mission design
Zombie Army 4: Dead War received a positive review from the German gaming magazine GamePro, which praised its immersive atmosphere and well-designed levels. The run-and-gun gameplay was described as consistently entertaining, driven by a diverse cast of enemies and a rewarding progression system. While the weapon selection is somewhat limited and missions can feel repetitive, meaningful upgrades help maintain a sense of advancement. GamePro noted that the game truly shines in online co-op, where the chaotic action reaches its full potential. However, the story falls short, lacking compelling twists or surprises. On the technical side, some aspects show their age – hit feedback and visual effects can feel outdated and respawn points are occasionally placed awkwardly. Additionally, there's no local co-op option, as multiplayer is restricted to online play.
In GamePro’s review, Zombie Army 4: Dead War earned a solid score of 79 out of 100. On Steam, the game enjoys a more favorable reception, with over 7,500 reviews – 86% of them positive. However, opinions are more divided on Metacritic: critics gave the game a Metascore of 74, while the User Score lags behind at just 4.6. Beyond some technical shortcomings, the most frequent criticism is the repetitive mission design, which can dampen long-term motivation for some players.
