The fan-made project Skywind brings The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind back to life using the Skyrim engine, featuring fully rebuilt assets, modern tech and complete voice acting. A newly released gameplay video showcases a full quest for the first time and has quickly captured the community’s attention, racking up over 150,000 views in just 24 hours.

Skywind is an ambitious fan project from the TES Renewal initiative, aiming to fully recreate Morrowind (2002) within the Skyrim Special Edition engine. Rather than a simple port, it’s a complete reimagining – every asset, from models and textures to sound design, is being rebuilt from the ground up. The goal is to breathe new life into the atmospheric world of Vvardenfell by combining modern technology, updated mechanics and an entirely new soundtrack.

On May 26, the Skywind team released their most detailed gameplay video yet for their total conversion of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind – and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Within just 24 hours, the YouTube video had surpassed 150,000 views, earned over 11,000 likes and sparked around 1,200 comments. The featured quest, titled Rescue Joncis Dalomax, offers the first detailed look at the reimagined world, showcasing how far the project has come.

The new video has been met with widespread praise. Fans are celebrating the project’s attention to detail, its faithful treatment of the original and its impressive technical execution. Many in the community are calling Skywind the Morrowind remaster that Bethesda should have made – but never did.

Free to play, no release date yet – but progress is clearly being made

Skywind is a non-commercial fan project that will be released entirely for free. However, players will need to own both Skyrim: Special Edition and Morrowind with all its expansions to play. According to the developers, about 60% of the interiors are complete, though regions like the Ashlands still require significant work. While there’s no official release date yet, many see this as a positive sign, as the team remains committed to a “quality over speed” approach.
