Nintendo's upcoming console will allow its Joy-Cons to convert to mice. Unfortunately, some testers have found that the Switch 2 controller is uncomfortable compared to an ergonomic mouse. A Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition video revealed that gamers will have an alternative. During a demo of Koei Tecmo's strategy title, viewers see a wired USB mouse scroll through maps.
Mouse mode may dramatically impact strategy games like Nobunaga’s Ambition and Civilization 7. Gamers can also target enemies accurately in shooters, including Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Still, the narrow shape of the Joy-Cons doesn't support palms like ergonomic mice. Also, when flipped on their sides, it's more difficult to access some buttons on the Switch 2 controller. Anticipating these issues, grips to make the Joy-Cons feel more like conventional mice have appeared for sale.
The original Switch supports third-party mice, though the list of compatible games is limited. Also, unlike Switch 2 games, many titles weren't designed to take advantage of the peripherals. The Nobunaga’s Ambition footage suggests that mice used with PCs will have a greater role. However, it's uncertain if every title with a Joy-Con mouse mode will embrace corded mice or wireless USB dongles. It's also likely that the Joy-Cons will still be needed for button presses.
Recent Nintendo Today! videos explained how the console is more accommodating to mouse users. Gamers can use the accessories to navigate the Switch 2 Home Menu more precisely. The app also showed how it's possible to adjust cursor speed. While there isn't a wide range of DPI settings, users can choose from three levels that suit different screen sizes and resolutions. Some Switch 2 games will also offer customization options during gameplay.
Other systems and titles with mouse support have failed to convert console users into desktop gamers. Nevertheless, the versatile Joy-Cons shipping with the Switch 2 may encourage more experimentation.
