A week ago, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games announced Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, which is practically a complete edition of the game comprising the base game and all DLCs and expansion released since its launch in September 2023.
The announcement of the Definitive Edition, which costs $69.99 across all platforms save for the Nintendo Switch version which sells for $59.99, was also confirmation that the game would no longer receive new content. That didn't go down well with fans as many hoped for a new story expansion and more DLCs for the game. Now, the Mortal Kombat account on X has released a statement addressing the complaints.
According to the post, they are aware of the many requests for continued support for the game. However, while the game will continue to receive support in the form of fixes and adjustments, there will be no new story chapters and additional DLC characters. The reason, based on the official statement, is because the NetherRealm team has to focus on its next project.
Players' disappointment isn't surprising considering there was anticipation for a new story expansion that would wash off the bad taste left by the overpriced Khaos Reigns expansion. Warner Bros. seems to have other plans since it's moving on so quickly from the game.
At the moment, it is not known what the next game from NetherRealm Studios will be but there are speculations that it might be a new Injustice game. The last title in the series was Injustice 2, released back in 2017. Considering James Gunn has said video games will be an integral part of the new DC Universe, now seems like a great time for another installment in the Injustice game series.
