The next instalment in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 9, is in development at Capcom and is said to be unveiled next year. It was previously reported that this instalment will be radically different from past games and while that still remains to be seen, the latest leak suggests that it will be a third-person game. The same leaker also recently shared that Resident Evil 9 was originally being developed as an open-world multiplayer game.
Capcom supposedly teased the next Resident Evil game in its Resident Evil 4 remake tribute video, but only with a ‘IX’ showing up at multiple occasions, and nothing else. Leaker Dusk Golem, on the other hand, has been sharing information about the game and his latest claim is that Resident Evil 9 is for sure a third-person title. Furthermore, it may have an optional first-person mode, but that’s not from one of his sources.
Dusk Golem also previously shared that Capcom was planning a radical change for Resident Evil 9 and as such, it was originally being developed as the complete opposite of Resident Evil 7, meaning a large open world multiplayer game. He added that Leon and Jill were still the protagonists but it was based in Singapore on a fictional island. This idea, however, was scrapped.
Capcom has not shared any information about the next Resident Evil game, but it is believed to have been in development since 2018. The long development cycle, according to Dusk Golem, indicates a major overhaul for the next instalment. The last title in the series was Resident Evil Village which came out in 2021. The Resident Evil 4 remake was released in 2023 and it sold 10 million copies, for which Capcom released a celebration video in April this year thanking fans for their support.
