Chrono Odyssey is an upcoming MMORPG from South Korean studio Npixel, which the developers claim will usher in a new era for the genre – at least according to a recent interview published on YouTube.
In the interview, the team offers the first in-depth look at how Chrono Odyssey aims to keep players engaged long-term – not just with stunning visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5 but also through open-ended content, unique time-based mechanics and collaborative world building. The goal is to create a dynamic game world where past, present and future intertwine, allowing players to shape their own stories through choices and exploration.
Time as a gameplay element
At the heart of the game is time as a core gameplay mechanic. Using a device called the Chronotector, players can restore broken paths, uncover hidden routes and access rare materials and lore through time portals – drawing clear inspiration from classics like Chrono Trigger. Rather than following linear questlines, Chrono Odyssey aims to let adventures emerge organically through gameplay.
Dynamic combat without traditional roles
The combat system in Chrono Odyssey breaks from tradition. Players start with six base classes, which can be further customized through weapon choices. There’s no classic tank-healer-DPS setup – each class is designed to stand on its own. Combat emphasizes active dodging, precise parrying and adaptive skill use. The game also features a mix of solo and group content, including time labyrinths, 3-player expeditions and dynamic PvEvP world bosses that add a competitive edge to cooperative gameplay.
Closed beta set for June 2025
Chrono Odyssey is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. A closed beta is planned for June 2025, and interested players can now sign up exclusively through Steam. Console users, however, will not be included in this test phase. The full release is also expected later this year, though an exact date has yet to be announced.
