Some Nintendo loyalists believe the upcoming handheld looks too ordinary. The lack of colored Switch 2 controllers contributes to a generic look. However, the latest Switch 2 leak focuses on customizing the new Joy-Cons with replaceable side panels.

While the Switch 2 specs are a noticeable upgrade over the previous handheld, some gamers wish it were as colorful. The upcoming console will launch with a predominantly black color scheme. On the other hand, the original system offered neon blue and red Joy-Cons at launch. Nintendo would later expand the selection of styles for the Switch controllers. Fortunately, according to a new Switch 2 leak, its Joy-Cons may have customizable side panels to add a splash of color.

Centro Leaks revealed on social media that some retailers are already selling colored Joy-Con 2 strips. The listings show orange and blue plastic pieces that slot into the side of the controllers. Also visible is a tool that may make the swapping process easier.

The customization potential of the Switch 2 controllers won't please the most particular gamers. Most of the accessories' casing remains a generic black with blue and orange accents. Buyers can't transform the look of the console, as is possible with PS5 cover plates. Still, the side panels may be enough to differentiate detached controllers in a multi-console household.

The upgraded Switch 2 specs allow it to match, if not exceed, the performance of the Steam Deck. Its style also resembles the Linux-based handheld more than the first Switch. Even so, some Nintendo fans wish the new system looked more like the first console. Other critics claim the colored Joy-Cons would give the $450 system a toyish appearance.

If replaceable side panels seem limiting, Nintendo will likely launch Switch 2 Joy-Cons in other colors soon enough. The first-generation Switch controllers will work with caveats but won't attach with magnets. Third-party alternatives are also an option, but accessory makers are on edge after Nintendo's lawsuit against Genki.
