Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake may not be 1:1, after cryptic Switch 2 leak

Despite The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake release date being set for 2026, the Switch 2 game remains a mystery. One of the biggest questions is whether the project is a 1:1 recreation of the original. A reliable leaker reignited the debate after a cryptic social media post.

Fans overreact 

Nintendeal was among the sources that revealed a Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console and Pro Controller. Their latest update is ambiguous but appears to suggest a faithful modernization of the N64 classic. The message reads, “levelveryzelda:-:oto”, without further clarification.

What the “leverlveryzelda” portion means is anyone’s guess. Still, Nintendo fans speculated the “oto” part stands for One to One. That would disappoint followers hoping the Ocarina of Time remake introduces more changes.

Fortunately for them, Nintendeal later clarified that they were not referring to a 1:1 format. Nevertheless, there is now additional uncertainty about what to expect with the Switch 2 game.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo followed the same model as Star Fox. Developers rebuilt its graphics from the ground up and added cutscenes and voiceovers. Even so, other than a new prologue and challenge mode, it was essentially the same title as Star Fox 64.

In a July 2026 conversation with Famitsu, the co-creator of The Legend of Zelda games argued for the merit of remakes. Shigeru Miyamoto noted how many younger players hadn’t experienced some of the company’s most popular releases.

Can a remake be a system seller?

Earlier in 2026, NateTheHate leaked that Nintendo would likely make the Ocarina of Time remake its major holiday attraction. The rumored Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console bundle and controller celebrating the franchise can also boost sales. Regardless, since the game is already available on the N64, 3DS, and other systems, players may anticipate something more unique.

It’s worth remembering that the 1:1 term is open to interpretation. Unlike a remaster, developers could do more than increase the resolution and frame rate. Updated controls and quality-of-life improvements are almost guaranteed. How much new content is offered in terms of levels or revamped dungeons is less clear.

Given that the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake release date is approaching, Nintendo may not stay silent for long. Fans are looking ahead to a potential September Direct for gameplay details and firm launch timing.
