Splinter Cell is certainly one of the most appreciated licenses in the video game industry, and many fans are eagerly awaiting the release of a new title. However, according to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, Ubisoft canceled a game in this franchise several years ago.
Thus, in this report, Nick Herman revealed that him, Dennis Lenart, and Pierre Shorette were working on a Splinter Cell game in 2017 at Ubisoft. And according to him, it looked promising, and the whole team was happy with the work they had done:
"I was so excited to be a part of this and help revitalize it, because it’s been dormant for a while. And we thought we could tell a great story and do something the fans would love."
However, this project was canceled by Ubisoft, causing great disappointment for Nick Herman:
"It was exciting to go to work for the first six months because we thought we were going to be able to make something really great. And then you realize that all of the things you care about, they don’t anymore. It’s a common thing in games."
As for the reasons behind this cancellation, Nick Herman explains that Ubisoft preferred live service games and had lost interest in other projects. Therefore, this Splinter Cell game became XDefiant, a title that was supposed to compete with Call of Duty. But as you know, this game was also a failure.
It must be said that little content was available for players, and the servers closed last June, a little more than a year after its release, causing the closure of the San Francisco and Osaka studios.
