Developer Fathomlight and its publisher, Crytivo, have announced their latest project on Steam on the 4th of November, along with a new trailer: the survival city-builder Drownlight. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a series of catastrophes raised the oceans, completely engulfing entire continents.
Amidst an ocean, covering one end of the horizon to the other, a handful of survivors find a lone lighthouse. Now under its shelter and guiding light, players “must rebuild, protect, and guide the final city of humankind,” in this Water World-esque themed builder.
The lighthouse serves as more than just “A Beacon for the Lost”; players will have to scavenge for resources to keep its fires burning, for “If the light dies, people vanish” into the darkness that holds “ancient secrets” and “unknown dangers”. For city-builder aficionados, players who’ve seen the game have labeled it “Frostpunk on water,” a label that the creator, Alexey Alexandrov, appreciated.
He also commented during a conversation with Gamepress:
Frostpunk is an incredible game, and I’m still far from that level. But if people compare my work to it, I must do everything I can to be worthy of that comparison. I deeply respect the Frostpunk team for their inspiring creation.”
The creator, who’d initially been working on the game by himself in his free time, after hours of his regular job, later added more people to the project during the course of development, who are helping him bring the title to life.
He continued: “Since childhood, I’ve dreamed of creating games where choices and survival truly matter. Drownlight is my first step toward that dream.” To get more information and communicate with the devs, you can join their Discord channel; an invite link is available on their Steam page.
The developers are currently running a playtest for the game, and players can access it via the ‘request access’ option on its Steam page. If accepted by the devs, players will be able to download and play the game in its current state. The playtest will let players experience Drownlight’s core functions; however, they should expect certain features to be unavailable, partially functional, or not functional at all, as it serves as a large-scale QA session to gather more information about the game and ensure a more polished, refined full release.
