Valve's rumoured Steam Controller successor is finally here. Thankfully, it ditches its predecessor's aesthetics for a more conventional PlayStation-style layout. However, it comes with two capacitive touch zones, right under the thumbsticks, which opens up the potential for numerous accidental inputs. They will likely do what they do on the Steam Deck and help with menu navigation.
The new Steam Controller also comes with Valve's new haptic gyro function, which enables gyro controls when the controller is gripped at specific points. The zones can also be mapped to additional functions. If that isn't enough, there are four additional mappable buttons at the back. Unsurprisingly, there's a dedicated Steam button and a second 'quick access' button that can be used to access Steam chat and other features.
Unlike first-party offerings from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the Steam Controller comes with TMR sticks. It charges via USB-C or a puck that attaches to its pogo pins magnetically. One can use the controller with a Steam Deck, Steam Machine or any PC with Steam on it. Other specs include four haptic motors, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth connectivity support.
Like the Steam Frame and Steam Machine announced earlier, the Steam Controller does not have a price or release date at the time of writing.
