Valve is reportedly preparing to launch a Steam Controller that is supposed to bring Steam Deck-style gaming to desktop PCs. The new gamepad could sport an innovative feature that might be particularly useful for the upcoming Steam Frame VR headset.

For months, rumors have claimed that Valve is preparing to launch a new VR headset called Steam Frame. Now, @SadlyItsBradley has also shared details about a new Steam Controller, which is designed for this headset but could also appeal to desktop PC gamers.

The mockup embedded below was AI-generated and is based on a photo of a current prototype. Apparently, the Steam Controller adopts the control layout of the Steam Deck. In addition to two analog sticks, a D-pad, shoulder buttons and the usual ABXY buttons, the Steam Controller also features two square trackpads. These should make it easier to move the cursor, so gamers might be able to comfortably play strategy games like Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition without a mouse.

A rather unusual feature is that both grips are rumored to detect the distance between the player’s hands and the controller. While this technology won’t track individual finger positions, it could still be useful for certain VR features, such as enabling or disabling motion tracking. The plastic surface reportedly has a slightly rough texture, similar to the Steam Deck. Lastly, the controller is expected to launch within the next few months, although an exact release date has not been confirmed thus far.
