The UltraBar X is a new input device for PCs that is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. The core set is priced at $270 plus shipping, and backers will face the usual financial risks of crowdfunding campaigns. Therefore, prospective buyers shouldn’t simply assume that the UltraBar X will be delivered as scheduled in April 2026 or that it will meet the expected quality standards.
Magnetic modules
The device contains individual magnetic modules that can easily be connected. There are several types of modules, as core module measures 199 x 50.4 x 59.6 mm and features a 7-inch display with a resolution of 280 x 1424 pixels. This module includes a USB Type-C port and supports wireless connections via Bluetooth and WiFi.
Environmental sensors included
The VivoCube is a much shorter module that comes with a 2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, while the so-called SenseCube sports a fairly extensive sensor array including mmWave for motion detection along with temperature, humidity and ambient light sensors.
Two other modules are basically input devices, namely the DotKey and the KnobKey. The former features mechanical switches, while the latter is a rotary dial. This accessory can also serve as a control hub for smart home setups and can control smart lighting, among other things. Last but not least, developers can use an SDK to customize these features.

I have been active as a journalist for over 10 years, most of it in the field of technology. I worked for Tom’s Hardware and ComputerBase, among others, and have been working for Notebookcheck since 2017. My current focus is particularly on mini PCs and single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi – so in other words, compact systems with a lot of potential. In addition, I have a soft spot for all kinds of wearables, especially smartwatches. My main profession is as a laboratory engineer, which is why neither scientific contexts nor the interpretation of complex measurements are foreign to me.

My fascination for technology goes back a long way to the Pentium II era. Modding, overclocking and treasuring computer hardware has since become an integral part of my life. As a student, I further developed a keen interest in mobile technologies that can make the stressful college life so much easier. After I fell in love with the creation of digital content while working in a marketing position, I now scour the web to bring you the most exciting topics in the world of tech. Outside the office, I’m particularly passionate about motorsports and mountain biking.
