When Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, gamers hoped that many older titles would arrive on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft repeatedly has reiterated its commitment to adding popular games like Diablo and Call of Duty. However, a list from Crusader II Elessar, shared on social media, shows how many favorites are still missing. A Windows Central article from Jez Corden discussed reasons for the delay.
Following the deal's completion in 2023, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer made some lofty promises. In a blog post, he explained, “We intend to make Activision Blizzard’s much-loved library of games – including Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty – available in Game Pass and to grow those gaming communities.” Many gamers expected a barrage of older titles to surface on Xbox Game Pass. Instead, there has only been a slow drip of classics added to the subscription service.
Xbox made similar statements in 2024, when Diablo 4 became the first Activision Blizzard Xbox Game Pass game. Still, the extensive list from Crusader II Elessar shows a substantial number of missing titles. In addition to older Call of Duty releases, notable omissions include Transformers and some Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. Microsoft itself also has yet to bring series like Project Gotham Racing to subscribers.
Why Game Pass still lacks popular Activision Blizzard games
Licensing issues could explain why Xbox hasn’t taken full advantage of its new back catalog. For example, gamers may think that Microsoft has the rights to X-Men games. Even so, Marvel’s publishing deals with rivals like Sony Interactive Entertainment are roadblocks.
Xbox also seems reluctant to overwhelm gamers with more entries from franchises already on the service. Microsoft is meticulous about how it curates the selection of Xbox Game Pass games. Releasing all the Call of Duty titles simultaneously could distract gamers from the upcoming Black Ops 7. Regardless, fans are growing impatient with this piecemeal approach.
