Dedicated gaming used to be enough to cover the monthly cost of Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Unfortunately, gamers are learning that Microsoft Rewards will soon have more restrictions. The company recommends using Xbox gift card codes, but these often require more points to redeem.

The Microsoft Rewards program has become gradually less lucrative for supporters. In the latest disappointment, members will soon no longer be able to redeem points for Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Microsoft has not yet made an official announcement. Still, multiple gamers have reported the same notice on their rewards dashboard.

The change would take effect on October 1st, with the company suggesting gamers rely on Xbox gift cards instead. Buyers can purchase the cards and then apply them toward the cost of Game Pass. Unfortunately, in most cases, gamers will need to spend more points to pay for subscription fees. One Reddit poster noted that a $20 gift card requires 19,000 points. Previously, it was possible to redeem only 12,000 points for a month of Game Pass Ultimate.

Gamers can earn Microsoft Rewards in a variety of ways, including by grinding quests in Xbox Game Pass games. Sadly, many fans are finding that their efforts are no longer appreciated. It takes longer to accumulate points, and there are fewer opportunities to accumulate them.

Game Pass subscribers may soon hear more bad news

Adding to concerns are potential price increases on Xbox Game Pass tiers. The last time the service saw a price hike was in July 2024. While Microsoft hasn’t revealed another increase for 2025, there have been signs of more unwelcome developments. In June, Better xCloud stumbled upon source code hinting at rising subscription rates. Xbox consoles have become significantly more expensive, and the services that accompany them may also become more costly.

With the updates to the Microsoft Rewards program, gamers may be on the hunt for Xbox gift card discounts. In October, the company plans to host a major sales event, which will likely include Xbox cards. Nevertheless, players who have stockpiled points are finding fewer attractive options to spend them.
