Several major retailers have opted to stop selling Xbox consoles after yet another price increase. The Walmart-owned Sam’s Club is the latest members-exclusive warehouse club to discount remaining systems. Reddit posters in U.S. locations have confirmed seeing a clearance Xbox Series S price of $239.31. The 512GB model recently saw its MSRP rise again from $379.99 to $399.99.
Sam’s Club advertised a similar Series S price before, but not since the most recently announced Xbox price increase. The 1TB alternative also suffered a price hike from $429.99 to $449.99.
Launching at $299.99 in 2020, the entry-level console was once considered an attractive value. The compact machine can’t run most Xbox games at 4K. Still, it’s compatible with the same titles as the Xbox Series X. Until Game Pass subscriptions became costlier, it was also a tempting way to access a growing library of entertainment. However, when demanding $399.99 or slightly lower at Amazon, even the also inflated $499.99 price of the PS5 Slim Digital seems more enticing.
The downfall of Xbox consoles
Currently, Sam’s Club still lists the Xbox Series S on its website, but its more expensive cousin is notably absent. Competing stores in the U.S. and around the world have elected not to carry the consoles at their new price points. Costco confirmed that it would stop offering the gaming systems in the U.S. and the UK. Before they disappear from shelves, New Zealand buyers reported an Xbox Series X price reduced by 50%.
With savings on the original Switch also now rare, budget gamers are finding fewer affordable options. A used PS4 is a contender, but Sony is gradually phasing out support for the machine. The lack of exclusive Xbox games also gives buyers fewer reasons to consider Microsoft’s consoles.
