GameStop increases used PS5 Pro price to $1499, with GTA 6 release likely a factor

Buyers may think they can purchase a pre-owned PS5 Pro console at a somewhat reasonable cost. Unfortunately, the shortage is now impacting used units at a major retailer. A memo has leaked, instructing GameStop employees to charge up to $1499 for second-hand hardware.
Because it refers to October 16th as “tomorrow,” some posters doubt the message’s authenticity. Still, it’s the PS5 Pro prices quoted that are most difficult for PlayStation supporters to accept. Nevertheless, the reliable Nintendeal believes the information is accurate.
Console inflation continues
According to the communication, the digital version of the console will cost at least $1399. Variations with bundled disc drives and the 30th Anniversary Edition have a greater value. Meanwhile, trade-in prices will range from $800 to $850.
With many observers blaming the approaching GTA 6 release date, the already scarce console is even harder to find. As a result, GameStop and competing stores are typically sold out in North America. The situation isn’t any better in Japan, where Sony has implemented a lottery system.
Paying more for used vs. new
Readers are debating why GameStop would price the gaming machines so much higher than new alternatives. On April 2nd, the MSRP of the flagship PlayStation system increased from $749.99 to $899.99 in the U.S. Other regions also saw significant upward adjustments. While expensive, that’s far cheaper than what the retailer plans to ask for pre-owned units.
The simplest explanation is the store has more freedom. Without heeding Sony's suggestions, it can match what they are selling for on other marketplaces. Currently, used PS5 Pro prices on eBay listings usually close above $1000, which is reasonable by comparison. Thanks to scalpers, new targets rarely go for less than $1250. Buyers who prefer in-person shopping can either leave unhappy or empty their bank accounts.
GameStop is also likely anticipating that the PlayStation console will become even more in demand. At launch, Rockstar’s GTA 6 is expected to run at 30 fps on the base model. The studio hasn’t commented on the PS5 Pro, but there's hope for higher frame rates and improved image quality, aided by PSSR upscaling.
