Sony brings PS5 Pro-style AI upscaling to regular PS5 with new QSSR tech

Sony is bringing AI-powered image upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5, almost two years after debuting PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution as one of the headline features of the PS5 Pro. The new technology is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, and the first supported games are Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. PSSR for the PS5 Pro. QSSR for the PS5. Did Kojima write this? Oh, wait, nevermind.
Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling born from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. It uses a streamlined neural-network architecture combined with an implementation specifically hand-tuned to maximise performance on the PS5's hardware.
The company is careful not to position QSSR as equivalent to PSSR. Sony says PSSR remains the "gold standard" on PS5 Pro, but claims QSSR still delivers noticeable improvements to image detail and image stability on the less powerful console.
Insomniac Games says QSSR improves pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel's Wolverine, particularly in dense environments such as Madripoor and Shinjuku. Sucker Punch similarly points to improved reproduction of fine character and environmental details in Ghost of Yotei, alongside better temporal stability than was previously possible on the PS5.
QSSR will not remain limited to Sony's first-party studios either. Sony says the library will be made broadly available to all PlayStation developers, opening the door for significantly more PS5 games to adopt AI-assisted upscaling in the future.
The arrival of QSSR does is essentially to keep visuals on the original PS5 somewhat up to speed with the PS5 Pro. The more expensive console still gets full-fat PSSR, while the standard PS5 receives a computationally cheaper implementation designed around its older hardware. And it comes at a crucial time. GTA 6's performance looked concerning on the PS5 Pro, and the regular PS5 will need all the help it can get to run Rockstar's flagship title.
