A homebrew Switch emulator is now available to test on jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles. The project is based on Eden, the open-source Switch emulator, and is called ProsperoEden, which allows gamers to play Switch titles on Sony's current-generation home console.

In a milestone for both emulation and jailbroken console capabilities, “ProsperoEden”, a new GitHub project by user “blackbearreloaded”, aims to bring Nintendo Switch emulation to PlayStation 5. The project is available to try for users running jailbroken versions of the console. The project is based on Eden, an open-source Nintendo Switch emulator that supports Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android. ProsperoEden extends that compatibility to PlayStation 5 consoles.

The State of Switch Emulation on the PS5

While the project is very new and the latest release is still in alpha, it is already quite capable. Multiple games are playable, but so far nothing is playable from start to finish. Additionally, the performance varies widely based on the game being tested. As per current reports:

  • Cuphead – playable at 60 FPS.
  • Metroid Dread – playable; reaches a maximum of 40 FPS.
  • Super Mario 3D World – playable at around 30-45 FPS
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – reaches around 40 FPS on a small window only and runs with major issues.
  • Hollow Knight – performance varies on project build version, previously reaching 60 FPS in specific sections.
  • Horizon Chase Turbo – playable at 50 FPS.
  • Jay and Silent Bob:     Chronic Blunt Punch – runs with major issues at 30 FPS.
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong – runs with major issues at 40 FPS.
  • Pokémon Legends Z-A – only reaches the language selection screen, which runs at 5.5 FPS; crashes when shut down.
  • Summerhouse – playable at 25 FPS.
  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – playable at 50-60 FPS, with the FPS dropping to 25 in some sections.
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons – runs at only 15 FPS, with major issues.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild -- 8-10 average FPS while in-game; menus run smoothly at 30 FPS.

ProsperoEden Features

Currently, ProsperoEden uses only OpenGL and has no Vulkan support. It also runs on PS5 firmware version 6.02, with user reports confirming support for firmware version 12.70, but only for older builds of the project. ProsperoEden supports DualSense controls and saves, and it even includes a native performance overlay.
