Sony tries new strategy for combating PS5 Pro scalpers in Japan

Sony is introducing a new hurdle for PS5 Pro buyers in Japan, requiring propsective buyers to demonstrate a history of PlayStation use before applying for a ticket to purchase the console. Sony Store Japan requires a Japanese PSN account and at least 60 hours of PS4 or PS5 gameplay recorded between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026. The measure is designed to make it harder for newly created accounts associated with scalping to qualify.

Applications opened on September 28 and remain available until October 7. If demand exceeds the number of consoles available, Sony will conduct a lottery, with successful applicants able to purchase the ¥137,980 (approx. $877) console during the sales period. The purchase deadline is November 2.

The approach also restricts access for people without qualifying Japanese accounts, including tourists seeking to buy the console. However, the 60-hour threshold may also exclude legitimate owners who play infrequently or have their activity recorded under another account. After all, gameplay history can establish account activity, but does not necessarily establish whether someone intends to purchase a PS5 Pro for personal use.
