Deal | With The Witcher 3 remaster out now, the first Witcher game is just under $1.50 on Steam

In The Witcher, players take on the role of witcher Geralt of Rivia. Following an attack on the witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen, he becomes increasingly entangled in political intrigue and social conflicts. Clear-cut choices between good and evil are rare – instead, the game focuses on moral gray areas and difficult decisions whose consequences sometimes only become apparent many hours later.

In terms of gameplay, The Witcher combines real-time combat, monster hunting and alchemy. Geralt uses different fighting styles depending on the enemy and can complement his swordplay with witcher Signs such as Aard, Igni or Quen. Potions and oils also play an important role, particularly in more challenging monster encounters. The game world isn't completely open, but is instead divided into chapters and larger areas that can be explored relatively freely.

The Enhanced Edition also reworked several aspects of the original game. These include an improved inventory, shorter loading times, greater stability and additional animations. On top of that, it includes two bonus adventures that add several more hours of gameplay.

German gaming magazine PC Games reviewed the Enhanced Edition of The Witcher when it launched in October 2008, particularly praising its mature fantasy world, dense atmosphere and compelling story. Geralt himself also made a very positive impression on the editors. Criticism was directed at the combat system, which becomes repetitive over time, the somewhat clunky camera and the relatively limited selection of equipment. According to PC Games, however, the strengths clearly outweigh the weaknesses – the game received 9 out of 10.

Metacritic lists The Witcher with a Metascore of 86 and a User Score of 8.2. On Steam, the RPG holds an 89% positive rating based on more than 88,000 player reviews.

85% off on Steam

The Witcher normally costs just under $10 on Steam, but is 85% off until October 1, bringing the price down to $1.49. According to SteamDB, this matches its previous all-time low, most recently reached in July. Geralt's first adventure is rated as “Playable” on the Steam Deck.

The fact that The Witcher is so cheap right now is probably no coincidence – after all, the new Witcher 3 remaster has just been released. Our direct comparison shows just how significant the graphical differences really are.
