The mid-size electric sedan has two motors with 180 kW each, which are paired to a 91kWh battery. Developed by Sony Honda Mobility, the new EV known as the Afeela 1 is set to launch in California next year at relatively ambitious prices. Update: Gorgeous hands-on pictures added

Sony Honda Mobility has hit a new milestone at CES 2025 by officially opening pre-orders for its first electric vehicle, the so-called Afeela 1. The electric car is the first product of the previously announced partnership between technology giant Sony and automaker Honda, the latter of which recently announced plans to merge with Nissan.

Price and availability

As it stands today, the Afeela 1 will be offered in two trim levels in the US:

  • Afeela 1 Origin: starting at $89,900
  • Afeela 1 Signature: starting at $102,900

Both model variants include a three-year subscription for various features, such as the Level 2 driver assistance system and other AI-powered features. Pre-orders are now open to customers in the state of California. EV buyers must pay a refundable deposit of $200, with deliveries for the Signature variant expected to begin in mid-2026. The cheaper Sony Honda Afefela 1 Origin variant, on the other hand, is not expected to be delivered until 2027.

Design and technical specifications

The Afeela 1 offers a range of up to 300 miles according to the EPA standard and supports Tesla's omnipresent Supercharger network in the US. The design is intended to embody both elegance and sportiness, and the exterior is fairly reminiscent of the Lucid Air or the Tesla Model S. The electric car is equipped with a total of 40 sensors and cameras that are used for the driver assistance system. The two electric motors have an output of 180 kW each, while the battery has a capacity of 91 kWh and can be charged with up to 150 kW.

A huge screen dominates across the entire width of the dashboard dominates the interior of the Afeela 1 Signature. Sony and Honda Mobility are trying to refine the driving experience with various AR integrations and a focus on entertainment, which might appeal to particularly tech-savvy EV drivers.

With the Afeela 1, Sony and Honda are trying to establish themselves in a crowded segment of high-priced electric vehicles. However, the launch of the Afeela takes place in a quickly changing EV market that is struggling with declining demand and the loss of tax credits in the US and other countries.

Over the long term, the Sony Honda Afeela 1 will also have to prove itself against strong EV competition from China, which can significantly undercut the lofty prices of the new electric sedan. California is arguably one of the most important EV markets where Chinese electric cars are practically not available, but it remains to be seen how the Sony Honda Adela 1 will fare against the likes of Tesla and other established automakers.
