The fourth-generation Apple iPhone SE is not only said to be getting a launch under a different name than originally expected, but also much earlier. The latest rumors suggest that it will go on sale in January. Update: Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman has now commented on the rumor, stating that the iPhone 16e and iPad 11 will indeed be launched with iOS 18.3, but not at the same time as the rollout of the operating system. Instead, the launch is said to be planned before the release of iOS 18.4, i.e., between the end of January and the end of April.
Just a few days ago, rumors suggested that the fourth-generation iPhone SE would be launched as the iPhone 16e and positioned as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 16. MacRumors has now learned from an allegedly trustworthy source that the iPhone 16e will be launched at the same time as the release of iOS 18.3.
Following the release of iOS 15.3, 16.3 and 17.3 in January, iOS 18.3 may well also be rolled out soon, as the beta version is already available. A launch in January, however, would be unusual for an iPhone since every iPhone SE to date has been launched in either March or April. On the other hand, after Apple had to discontinue sales of the iPhone 14 and the third-generation iPhone SE at the end of December due to the EU's USB-C obligation, an impending launch of the iPhone 16e makes perfect sense.
According to rumors, the iPhone 16e has a 6.1-inch OLED display with a frame rate of just 60 Hz, a 12 MP selfie camera with Face ID, a single 48 MP main camera on the back and the latest Apple A18. Compared to the more expensive iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e does not have the dedicated camera shutter button and the 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera, among other things. MacRumors adds that the iPad 11 will also get a launch in January. The tablet is expected to come with a more modern processor and 8 GB of RAM in order to support Apple Intelligence.

Growing up in regional Australia, I first became acquainted with computers in my early teens after a broken leg from a football (soccer) match temporarily condemned me to a predominately indoor lifestyle. Soon afterwards I was building my own systems. Now I live in Germany, having moved here in 2014, where I study philosophy and anthropology. I am particularly fascinated by how computer technology has fundamentally and dramatically reshaped human culture, and how it continues to do so.
