CheckMag | Apple iPhone SE 4: First iPhone of 2025 may well be a bargain despite slight price increase

What will be cheaper and better than the iPhone 14? That's right, the new iPhone SE, which will probably win over old and new friends alike in the first quarter of 2025. According to a recent price leak from Japan (via Naver Forum), Apple is likely to increase the price from the official $430 to just under $500, but there is still a lot to be said for the revamped successor to the iPhone SE 2022, which is no longer officially available in Europe due to the EU-wide USB-C requirement.
Apple may be forced to tidy up its iPhone lineup
In the US, a new iPhone 14 (which also no longer available in the Apple Store here) officially costs $599, the iPhone 15 $599, and the current iPhone 16 an additional $100. However, this lineup will not make much sense following the launch of a $500 iPhone SE 4 if, according to previous leaks, it is significantly more powerful than the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 thanks to the Apple A18 chip and, unlike the latter, it also supports Apple Intelligence, which suggests that both older iPhone models will soon disappear from the market.
An iPhone 14 design for significantly less money
The iPhone SE 2025 is expected to come with Apple's own modem for the first time and inherit both the 48 MP camera and 12 MP selfie camera of the iPhone 15. This is also another reason why contuining to sell the older and more expensive iPhones after the launch of the iPhone SE 4 hardly makes sense, especially since the old-fashioned design of previous iPhone SE models is no longer an argument against the "budget iPhone". With the same 6.1-inch OLED as the iPhone 14, including Face ID, there is very little to be said against the upcoming iPhone Special Edition.
Also expected to be comparatively cheap in Europe
Only the lack of an ultra-wide-angle camera would speak in favor of the older, regular iPhones. Whether this is worth a surcharge of $100 to 200 is questionable for many price-conscious consumers. A price in euros for the iPhone SE of 2025 is not yet known, and prices are also likely to rise in Europe. We currently expect the basic version to cost around 600€, which is also a bargain compared to the official 850€ for the iPhone 15 and 950€ for the iPhone 16.
