Current iPhones, such as the iPhone 16 Pro, already look comparatively borderless, but the iPhone of the future aims to go one big step further in banishing the black bezels from the OLED display altogether, according to a report from the supplier industry in South Korea. The report states that Apple is considering a flat but completely bezel-less display, with content displayed right up to the edge of the case, like the current Apple Watches.
In contrast to what Android OEMs have previously offered in terms of AMOLED displays, Apple's proposed display does not curve at the sides, i.e., Apple does not want any visible curves, which rules out a quad-curved panel that is currently popular among Chinese flagships such as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Samsung's Edge Panels, which were previously a strong focus of the company, are also not an adequate solution for Apple for the same reason, according industry insiders.
Both LG and Samsung are currently developing display solutions for Apple's future iPhones, but both are facing major technical challenges in creating the completely flat yet borderless OLED panel that Apple so desires. According to experts, the "optically clear adhesive technology" (OCA) required for this has not yet fully matured and is developing slowly. Hence, borderless iPhones are not expected in 2026. According to earlier statements from a Samsung Display spokesperson, the South Koreans are also working on improved under-display cameras for Apple.
